Values - How To Identify What Is Truly Important To You

Values are the things that we believe are important in our life, they guide and motivate our attitudes or actions. They help us to describe the personal qualities that we embody, the person we want to be and determine how we treat other people and how we want to be treated.

This is where authenticity comes in. When what you say and do matches your values then you are being authentic and have the ability to feel happy and fulfilled. However, when there is a misalignment, you will feel out of sorts. You might not be able to put your finger on it. You might feel restless and ‘just not right’.

You may feel uncomfortable or get an uneasy feeling in the pit of your stomach, Your body will be reflecting what is going on in your mind, giving you an alarm that something needs to be re-examined.

Your values are not set in stone and may change as your life unfolds. After you have children, it is often said that you see things in a different way, and spending every hour at work to further your career may now not be your chosen path. You might value more time at home with your family. Or you may work even harder to make sure your family can enjoy what you want for them.

So if they are so important, should we pay more attention to them?

The answer to that is a resounding yes. Identifying our values can be extremely illuminating in showing why you behave the way you do in certain situations. It may explain why some people irritate you but you're not sure why - they've probably come into conflict with one of your values.

Once you know what your values are, you will have clarity, confidence and integrity in any decisions that you need to take. You can determine what you value most and be guided in the right direction.

Some people call this intuition. Knowing the right thing to do without consciously having to think about it.

So, what are your values?


Oestrogen: When You Have Too Much of a Good Thing

Oestrogen is an amazingly important hormone. It is the female sex hormone, responsible for women's curves, breasts and hips. But both women and men have it.

The problem arises when oestrogen is out of balance with other hormones such as progesterone and testosterone leading to oestrogen dominance. The symptoms are bad enough but oestrogen dominance has been linked to breast and ovarian cancers, diabetes and metabolic syndrome.

What are the Symptoms?

You might suffer from:

  • Trouble reducing weight
  • Bloating or water retention
  • Cold hands and feet
  • Fatigue
  • Swollen or tender breasts
  • Frequent migraines or headaches
  • Low sex drive
  • Bad PMS
  • Low mood or irritability
  • Women might exhibit weight gain around their hips and buttocks
  • Men might exhibit 'moobs' - man boobs, low libido, loss of muscle mass, increased abdominal fat

    What is causing it?

  • Xenoestrogens, which are oestrogen mimicking chemicals, are everywhere. Some in places you wouldn't expect. Plastic water bottles, pesticides, herbicides, parabens found in many beauty products which extends their shelf life, sulphates used in shampoos as foaming agents and home cleaning products.
  • Many foods such as soy (although fermented soy products seem ok), refined sugars and simple carbohydrates.
  • Alcohol especially beer that contains hops.
  • Meat and diary products that contain growth hormones and antibiotics are also at risk of increasing your oestrogen load. The problem with some meats and dairy is that hormones are pumped into cattle to fatten them up and so what was in the cow is now in you.
  • Stress - yes stress. One of the stress hormones is cortisol which is made in part by progesterone so if your body is making lots of cortisol then it is using up that progesterone which can lead to an imbalance in oestrogen/progesterone levels and contribute to oestrogen dominance.
  • Slow digestion - it keeps the toxins inside your body rather than removing them.
  • Being overweight - the more fat cells you have, the more oestrogen you make. The more oestrogen you make, the more fat you store and so on.

    8 Ways to help Redress the Balance

    1. Keep your Body Moving
    Movement boosts Human Growth Hormone (resulting in more muscle, less fat) and expels excess oestrogen from the body.
    2. Look after you Liver
    How much alcohol do you drink? Your liver can't help you detox excess oestrogen if it is overloaded with alcohol.
    3. Eat well
    Eat less meat and organic where you can.
    Try weak phytoestrogenic food like pomegranates, flax seeds, berries, oats and broccoli which can counteract the effects of oestrogen.
    4. Eat healthy bacteria
    Bacterial imbalance in the gut interferes with the proper elimination of oestrogen from the body. Try taking a daily probiotic.
    5. Boost Fibre Intake
    Insoluble fibre binds to excess oestrogen in the digestive tract so that it can be eliminated from the body. Think fruit and vegetables especially cruciferous vegetables, broccoli and kale, whole grains, seeds and nuts.
    6. Reduce your weight
    The more fat cells you have, the more oestrogen you make and the more oestrogen you make, the more fat you store and so on in a circular fashion.
    7. Go Green
    Look at your personal care products and cleaning products - how many chemicals are in them? Which can you do without? This might be a gradual process but when things run out, maybe look at the alternatives rather than the products that you always choose.
    8. Stress Less
    Try hypnosis, meditation or yoga and get your stress hormones under control.

    Oestrogen dominance can be linked to diabetes, metabolic syndrome and certain forms of breast and ovarian cancers so if you are concerned your doctor is your first port of call.

    But always remember that there are things you can do to put you in control of your health.
